This sort of thing isn't exactly new to me. [Not that he's trying to imply that zombies are the norm in his world, but the people who'd been infected with the Croatoan Virus hadn't acted all that differently from what he'd seen here.]
Where 'm I meeting you?
[....and there's a pause on Dean's end as well before he answers, almost flippantly:] Lucifer. The Devil. We talked about him last week. So congrats on the awesome tech.
[But he would seriously rather discuss this in person.]
Dean had been near the residential area, but not in it, so he's only a few minutes from the cafe. When he gets there, he glances around and orders and pays for a few sandwiches before taking the food and settling at a table in the corner - secluded enough, with a good view of the door. If Hiro didn't get here within those ten promised minutes, Dean was calling him and then going to find him.]
[ It's close to the ten minute mark, but true to his word, there's Hiro. He's ... wearing a helmet? It looks kind of like a streamlined motorcycle helmet, except the texture's all rough carbon fiber with a one-way faceplate. Keeping an eye out for any possible zombies (there are none), he awkwardly takes the steps up the cafe two at a time. Okay, safe. More importantly: safe from his brother knowing he went outside during zombie plague fun times.
Once inside, he removes the helmet and sets it aside. ]
So did you. [The helmet gets a raised eyebrow and Dean refrains from commenting for about two seconds.] Nice helmet. You getting both of us in trouble with your brother for coming out?
[Never mind that Dean is older than both of them. He understands that Tadashi wants to protect Hiro in any way that he can. The helmet's a decent enough idea, but Dean had come armed. Not that anyone could tell just by looking at him.
On to business though.] You said you wanted to know how well it worked.
[It's a statement and he can always rehash what had happened - leaving out the whole bit where Lucifer had tried to rearrange his face. He'd been healed up by a healer, so there wasn't any evidence at least. But he figures Hiro has a better idea of what kinds of data he wants.]
Uh - [ Probably. Yes. Older brothers are always gonna be older brothers. ] - I needed to test the new helmet anyway. If we're gonna have a zombie apocalypse, I need to know my biohazard armor works.
[ Speaking of which. He brightens a bit at that. ]
Yeah, come on. Tell me everything. How'd the range do? Did it snap on the way it was supposed to? And did you get his supernatural stuff or just the nanites' powers?
Uh-huh. Somehow I think that running a live test on yourself isn't exactly something he'd be thrilled with. [Biohazard armor. Not something that Dean had thought about, but then again the Winchesters didn't usually have time to suit up. It depended on what they were up against, but.]
Not sure about the range in actual combat. I mean. I tested it out at home and it was about five feet, give or take a bit. No headaches either. [Hiro had specifically told him not to test it on himself, but. Well, it was done now.]
Anyway. Lucifer was pretty up close and personal, so the range could've been a foot or so. And it shut down everything. [Dean grins at the memory. Sure, Lucifer had been pissed, but it had been worth it.] Same for the cuff. No powers.
[There's just one little catch. Remember that "bad news" that Dean had mentioned? It's coming now.] But I had to use a sigil to banish him after I got it on. No clue where he ended up, but the power in the cuff is probably gone by now. ...so how strong is the lock on it? Because I'm kind of thinking that Luci's gonna ditch the new jewelry.
So we won't tell him. No problem. [ Except his brother has a GPS tracker on him and is undoubtedly watching his every move during this whole plague situation. Details.
He sure does make a face when Dean mentions testing it on himself, though. ] I told you not to ... You're lucky it didn't make your head hurt like mine does. [ He brightens again. ] Man, if it cleaned out Lucy completely though ... I'm doing a better job than I thought.
[ A beat. It takes him a moment for Dean's last comment to sync in. ] Wait. Wait wait. He got away with it? With my tech?
[Dean shrugs.] I like to make sure everything's working fine before heading out with it.
[It had nothing to do with his faith in Hiro's abilities. It was just good sense.
And that was an internal cringe. Whatever he says here, Dean's not going to admit that it was pretty much either his life or the tech. And besides:] I can get it back, okay. I'll get it back. Believe me. I don't want him running around with something like that any more than you do.
And he didn't get away. I... banished him. [Which he'd already said. Important semantics.]
[ Auuugh that's still bad. He understands that Dean had to protect himself, but he's still awful leery of people stealing his tech. And the literal devil making off with an experimental new power limiter? Sure does sound like a recipe for disaster. He groans a little, covering his face in his hands. ]
No, just ... Don't be stupid about it and get yourself hurt. But - god, please tell me he's not real good at tech.
[Who have you been talking to, Hiro? "Stupid" is practically Dean's middle name when it comes to ingenious plans. But he's not actually trying to get himself killed either. Not to mention that dying while trying to get back the freaking collar meant that Lucifer would still have it.]
I'll be fine. And no. Being locked in Hell for a few centuries or so has probably kept him out of the modern tech loop. But I still don't want him to have it for too long. [Since, even if Lucifer couldn't figure it out on his own, he might be able to find someone else who could. Dean can't chance that.]
[ Priorities, Dean. Jeez. Hiro makes a disbelieving face - he knows how bad older brothers are about protecting themselves. Probably an expression that Dean's seen on Sam's face many times before. ]
Well I don't either. Look, why don't I just make you an EMP? Then you can disable it without having to fight him again.
[That is an expression that he's used to seeing on Sam's face, and he's actually a pro at doing whatever he wants regardless because greater good, etc. Still, the EMP suggestion gets a considering look.]
Okay. How permanently are we talking about disabling it here? And the EMP wouldn't affect anything else, right?
[But, on the other hand.] There's still a good chance that I'll end up fighting him again until I figure out how to put him on permanent lockdown here. I can't just leave him running around, stirring up shit.
Okay. But it'll permanently disable it? I still need to figure out where he's keeping it though, right? Unless you've got a tracker or something in it.
[Which would actually be a great idea if anything like this happened again.]
That's kind of my job. [Which reminds him.] Here. I brought something for you.
[Dean reaches into his pocket and pulls out a sheet of paper, unfolding it to reveal an odd design drawn in ink.] Just in case. It's an angel banishing sigil, and it'll get rid of Lucifer or any other angel if they're around you. This is important. It has to be drawn using blood and you have to activate it by putting your hand in the circle and your hand has to be bleeding. Drawn with blood, activated with blood. Okay?
[He really has no idea how Hiro will take that, but he'd rather the kid had an out if Lucifer did decide he was interesting for whatever reason. Dean had been way younger than Hiro when he'd first learned about hunting.]
Yep. It's easier to just break something than temporarily knock it out, trust me. ... Do you want a tracker?
[ Because he can do that too. That's easy, honestly; just a simple GPS. He opens his mouth to say as much ... and then there's a sigil. Huh. He turns it around in his hands for a moment - and then startles when the rest of Dean's comment sinks in. Um. ]
Wh - what the hell! Do I look like the kind of person who goes around cutting themselves?
Ahahaha. Is it bad that this is kind of amusing me?
A tracker would be handy, actually. Wouldn't take up too much space, would it?
[And yeah... he kind of expected this sort of reaction. But. Well.]
No. But a little blood is better than whatever Lucifer might do. Trust me.
Look. I don't think you'll have to use it, but it's an option. There are other wards, too. Things that'll keep an angel from coming into your house or finding you. Lucifer can't find me unless I tell him where I am and I don't know if he'll go after somebody else instead.
[Basically, Dean cares about you and doesn't want to see you get hurt, so take the damn sigil.]
I get that, but - dude, this is crossing a line into super weird. Like, majorly weird. I'm okay with trying out your weird magic symbols, but is blood really necessary?
[Not that weird. But.... Hiro doesn't really know anything about Dean's life.]
For that one it is. It has to be blood. But that's a last resort, alright? I can show you some of the other ones, too, if you want. But hopefully you'll never need them.
[ He really doesn't. Looks like he's about to find out, though. He kind of makes a face at the thought of all this but - he was going to learn Charter Magic from Sabriel before it had turned out he'd had zero capability for it. What's the harm in trying this? Sure would be nice to have a last ditch weapon against an angel that might potentially hate him, after all. ]
I guess I can always learn them and never use them.
[This is barely the tip of the iceburg, Hiro. Dean watches him, raises an eyebrow at the face. And that was the reason why he didn't really get close to people. Because they couldn't handle the truth. It doesn't really matter how the kid feels about it though, as long as it keeps him safe.]
[And he hasn't even see Dean's tattoo. Or, you know, the handprint seared into the flesh of his arm.]
Knock yourself out. [He shrugs. Why would he care if Hiro wanted them on his phone? At least they'd be with him.] You want me to send you the others later?
[He'll just.... take pictures of the walls of his house and send those.]
